Main Story
Owensboro, KY – (August 10, 2011) – Cooperative Health Services, an affiliate of Owensboro Medical Health System, will open The Center for Integrative Medicine on Monday, August 15. The practice will offer primary medical care blended with complementary therapies and specialize in treating adult women.
“Our focus is on women because we often are unsuccessful in making our healthcare a priority,” says Kay Corpus, MD, the center’s family medicine physician. “It’s less demanding for a woman to take care of her family if she stays healthy, and integrative medicine is a wonderful approach that empowers women to take charge of their health.”
Integrative medicine is making an imprint on many of the nation’s hospitals, universities and medical schools with a growing body of evidence in its effectiveness to improve health. Healthcare organizations such as the Mayo Clinics in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida—and Scripps Health in Southern California—operate integrative medicine centers. Leading universities such as Duke, the University of California and Johns Hopkins now include integrative medicine in medical school curriculum.
Integrative medicine includes—but is not limited to—conventional medical care, therapeutic massage, aerobic exercise, acupuncture, strength training, nutrition counseling, physical therapy, personal training and meditation.
“Patient-centered medicine, which is a chief characteristic of integrative care, is a practical strategy to health that that makes the patient a partner to personalize her unique conditions, needs and circumstances,” Corpus said. “Integrative medicine emphasizes a proactive approach to good health with prevention and early intervention. It provides a broader treatment plan to cure illness.”
The center’s office includes three treatment rooms and one massage room, is designed with a spa feel and furnished with holistic elements. The décor includes river rocks, eco-friendly paint and subdued lighting. The waiting and massage areas have bamboo flooring, and massage tables have replaced typical furnishings found in exam rooms. The center will also offer a tea bar.
