Chair of the OMHS Board of Directors Quality and Safety Committee
"Receiving this award for the third year demonstrates that we provide consistently superior healthcare for our patients. Quality improvement continues to be an emphasis in our board meetings and throughout our organization."
Quality at OMHS
OMHS continues to rank among the nation's top hospitals due to its persistent efforts to focus on quality improvements, including initiatives to improve patient outcomes for joint replacements, heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic lung disease and reduce the incidence of infections, blood clots and pressure ulcers from skin breakdown. These efforts have helped OMHS dramatically improve its Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) to well below the national average. Watch a video as our hospital president explains this improvement.
Meanwhile, the OMHS Board of Directors continues to pursue quality care as OMHS' primary focus. The Board Quality and Safety Committee, made up of board members and physicians, provides leadership in setting priorities, monitoring progress and guiding the hospital in achieving quality goals. Team members also serve on other leading patient safety and quality teams within the hospital, enabling us to spread the initiatives to all hospital departments and involve our entire staff.
What it means for patients
Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence, according to HealthGrades data, had a 29.82 percent lower risk-adjusted mortality rate among Medicare beneficiaries compared to all other hospitals. HealthGrades estimates that if all hospitals performed at the level of those in the top five percent, 158,684 Medicare patients could potentially have been saved. From our perspective, efforts to improve quality mean patients are getting back to their lives sooner and with fewer complications. Watch a video as our Patient Safety Officer explains the team effort that goes into quality and what it means for our patients.
