Outpatient Surgery/Preadmission

Service/Responsibilities

Cares for all surgical and GI lab patients who are outpatient surgeries/procedures and AM admits. A 35-bed unit with two nursing stations, registration and admitting area.

Technology

Op surgery will be implementing computerized charting in 2009. We have stand-alone monitors for vital signs, new stretchers that have pressure-relieving mattresses, and can more comfortably accommodate all patient sizes.

Staffing

RN’s, ARNP’s and a unit secretary staff Pre admission clinic. The pre admission clinic is supported by Anesthesia services. RN’s, CNA’s and unit secretary staff OP surgery. OP surgery has admitting clerks to assist with admissions and registration.

Daily census averages around 70 patients a day. A RN directs all care.

Training and Education

OMHS offers on-site training and continuing education opportunities monthly that are free to their employees. All RN’s are encouraged to obtain specialty certification.

Continuous Quality Improvement

Op surgery participates in IHI (The Institute for Health Care Improvement) and SCIP measures for surgical patients to improve care and outcomes.  Nurses attend meetings and participate in implementing care to achieve these quality goals. Op surgery also conducts it’s own patient satisfaction survey to get more immediate feedback on patient’s care.
