Labor & Delivery

Service/Responsibilities

Labor & Delivery primarily treats laboring patients. Occasionally the unit may treat antepartum or other pregnancy-related outpatients such as non-stress  tests.

Technology

The Labor & Delivery department uses fetal monitoring . We currently use paper charting.

Staffing

The unit has 4 triage beds and nine labor rooms. We also have 2 surgery suites and are in the process of building a recovery room. Our average daily census varies. Staffing is usually two patients to one nurse.

Training/Continuing Education

OMHS offers several classes that benefit the unit directly. Those classes include acute care, NRP, Fetal monitoring, and Grand rounds. An educator trains new hires and we have in house PALS training.

Continuous Quality Improvement

The department is always looking for process improvement, patient care first, process simplification for nursing, team building, and hospital quality initiatives including patient identity. Prenatal education and breastfeeding classes are also offered.
