Diane York is on a mission.
Too many people, she says, are at higher risk for heart disease, stroke and other health problems because they don’t monitor their blood pressure. That is a trend that York and the HealthPark staff are trying to change.
“What people need to realize is that your blood pressure numbers really matter,” says York, a health promotion specialist at the HealthPark. “When your blood pressure is high, lowering it by just five points has a tremendous impact on your overall health, reducing your risk for heart disease and stroke.”
On Sept. 14, the HealthPark will offer free blood pressure screenings in the main lobby.
Visitors will be able to check their numbers and to learn why they are important. Screenings also take place each Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. in the Golden Partners area. You can also have your blood sugar checked as well.
York says the screening initiative is part of a larger, statewide crusade to increase blood pressure literacy. Both she and med/surg director Joni Sims serve on the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Task Force, which is working to educate Kentuckians about blood pressure numbers.
