Getting started in surgical technology

So you're ready to step into a career as a surgical tech. But where do you start?

First, you'll need to earn your diploma or degree, which will take approximately two years to complete. Many area schools offer surgical technology programs, including Owensboro Community & Technical College, which partners with OMHS. As a student, you'll learn anatomy and medical terminology and get hands-on experience working at the hospital. OCTC also offers an 18-hour certificate program for nurses.

If you're an OMHS employee, you can take advantage of your tuition reimbursement benefit to help pay for your education.

To work as a surgical technologist at OMHS, you will also need to pass the certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. If you're hired at OMHS, you'll have up to six months to complete your exam.
