Sherry's day in pictures

OMHS scrub tech Sherry J. walks you through her day

Scrubbing In

  • Before the day's first surgery, Sherry washes thoroughly at the scrub sink using a special soap.
  • Clean fingernails are a must.
  • Techs angle their elbows to channel the rinse straight into the sink.
  • Sherry's uniform includes hat, mask and gown.
  • Double gloves guard Sherry's hands--and the patient--in case a glove tears during surgery.

        Tools Of The Trade

  • Prepared by the sterile processing staff, the case cart contains all the items a surgeon may need for the procedure.
  • The sterile field contains the items most likely to be used during surgery. It is Sherry's job to make sure everything is ready for a smooth procedure.
  • The sterile field includes sterile linens, instruments, scopes, and implants.
  • Sherry prepares the bone clamps for an ankle procedure.
  • The operating room is the surg tech's workspace.
  • Sherry gets ready next to the operating table. During the procedure, she'll stand elbow to elbow with the surgeon, handing instruments with precise timing.

Prepping for ankle surgery

  • Sherry covers the table with sterile linens.
  • Sherry counts her supplies. After the surgery, techs must account for all items used to make sure none are left in the patient.
  • Surgery prep is a team effort.
  • This orthopedic procedure will require a drill with a fully charged battery.
  • Sherry handles the drill like a pro.
  • Ready for action!
