SonoCiné can find cancers when they are smaller

Mammography has provided revolutionary screening for detecting breast cancer, saving tens of thousands of lives since the 1980s. But now, depending on the anatomy of some women, doctors may recommend SonoCiné--an advanced breast ultrasound technology to help detect cancers that mammography may miss. It is not a replacement for mammography.

"Mammography typically finds cancers small enough to be treated successfully," says Dr. Terry Tyler, a radiologist and chief outpatient diagnostic officer for Owensboro Medical Health System, but women with dense breasts could benefit from a supplementary ultrasound exam. "Up until now, we've used breast ultrasound as a diagnostic tool; SonoCiné allows us to use ultrasound for early detection."

SonoCiné ultrasound, added to an annual mammogram, can find more small cancers than mammography alone and increases confidence in your diagnosis.

If your mammogram shows you have "dense" breasts, you may want to consider a SonoCiné examination in addition to your mammogram. In dense breasts, studies show that an additional ultrasound can find 40% to 100% more cancers than found by mammography alone.

How SonoCiné works:

"SonoCiné makes cancer more visible because the breast tissue appears white while cancerous tissue appears dark," Tyler says. "It also takes an ultrasound video, which can be stopped, magnified and reviewed by the radiologist."
