Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides a dose of 100% pure oxygen while the patient lies comfortably in a pressurized chamber. This dosage is nearly five times the concentration of oxygen found in the air, which is about 21%.
How it Works
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy greatly increases the amount of oxygen delivered to body tissues by the blood. The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy result from an oxygen-enriched bloodstream - not from the direct contact of the oxygen with the wounds. For this reason, wound dressings are usually left in place during treatment.
This intense dose of oxygen offers distinct therapeutic benefits and can be used to treat a variety of illnesses. It may be the primary treatment method or combined with antibiotics, wound care and/or surgery. Referring physicians are provided with monthly progress notes regarding their patients' wounds.
