Neonatal Intensive Care at OMHS

As you prepare for the arrival of your new baby, you probably have a number of questions about the delivery process and what to expect at OMHS. It is especially common for expectant parents to be concerned about the possibility of a pre-term arrival.

With our newly-expanded Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), you can rest assured that OMHS is ready for the 'what if' circumstances that can occur in the delivery room. Our program is a partnership with Neonatal Associates, UofL Healthcare, and Kosair Children's Hospital, so you can count on the highest levels of expertise, the best technology, and the compassionate care that has always made OMHS a special place for newborns and their families.

Our NICU can accomodate babies born as early as 28 weeks and weighing as little as 1250 grams (2.75 pounds). Our facility is equipped and prepared to respond to a number of medical situations, including babies with underdeveloped lungs and those needing special umbilical catheters, ventilator support, cardiac and respiratory monitoring, and diagnostic testing. We are licensed for seven beds.

Our small size means your baby will receive personalized, individual physician care in a warm, comfortable setting. It's a healing environment we are proud to offer our families.

A guided tour with nursery manager Ashley Denton.

What makes the NICU at OMHS such a special place for premature babies and their families?

Neonatology Expertise

Our program is currently led by Dan Stewart, president of Neonatal Associates in Louisville, Ky. Our staff includes neonatology specialists and nurse practitioners who work together to provide onsite care 24 hours a day.

Our nurses are also experts in caring for premature infants, certified in neonatal resuscitation. This includes nurses in the Nursery, NICU, Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby units. The nursery staff receives extensive hands-on training at Kosair's Children's Hospital and is also STABLE-trained.

Technology

Our newly-expanded NICU features some of the most advanced technology available, so parents can be sure their baby will receive top-quality care. One of the highlights is the Giraffe OmniBed, a state-of-the-art incubator that simulates the womb experience for the newborn. The unit also participates in the UofL Health Care remote presence robot network, linking patients to UofL pediatric subspecialists through a secure Internet connection.

Newborn-Centered Approach

We believe OMHS is a special place to be born, and we strive to welcome each of the 1,800 babies we deliver each year with the most loving and nurturing experience possible. Our early arrivals have unique needs, so the NICU offers special programming designed to stimulate healthy development. Our developmental care plan means infants will experience a soft, soothing environment designed just for them! Dim lighting, low noise, and lots of soft, cushiony objects are just right for your early arrival. We also promote skin-to-skin contact through our kangaroo care program, encouraging parent-child bonding through the special power of touch.
